TesseraVisiting the Colosseum and the Forum

The best audio guide for the Colosseum and the Forum, compared

Short answer: for the Colosseum alone, almost any audio guide will do. The difference shows up next door. Your ticket also opens the Roman Forum and the Palatine, which are bigger, harder to read and barely labelled, and most guides either stop at the Colosseum or cover them thinly. Here are the four options worth considering, and where each one ends.

What actually matters here

MyColosseum, the official park app

Free, published by the Parco archeologico del Colosseo. You can buy tickets in it, see visit routes and listen to interactive audio guides in Italian and English that follow you through the Colosseum, including the underground, the middle gallery and the upper level. It uses your position to start the right track, so it is built to be used hands-free.

Store reviews are mostly negative and worth reading first. The recurring complaints: the audio has to be downloaded in advance because there is no usable Wi-Fi on site, location-triggered playback is unreliable, and it drains the battery. Several reviewers also wish for more languages. Download everything at the hotel, and check the publisher’s name, since older apps with similar names exist.

The rented guide at the Colosseum

A handheld device rented at the amphitheatre for a few euros. No phone, no preparation, and it goes back at the exit. Its limit is in the name: it is a guide to the Colosseum, and it does not come with you across to the Forum and the Palatine.

Rick Steves Audio Europe

Free, downloadable, in English, and genuinely good company: separate walks through the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, excerpted from his guidebook. They are linear tours with no map of where you are, so you follow the route as described. Best for an English speaker on a first visit who wants the highlights well told.

Tessera

Ours. 69 narrated stops across the Forum, the Palatine and the Colosseum on one plan drawn from survey data, with six timed routes: from a half-hour bonus on the underground to a full day. Everything downloads in advance and works in airplane mode. English, Russian, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Italian, French and Chinese are all in one purchase; five stops are free, the rest is one payment, not a subscription.

The honest limits: a synthetic voice reads the stories, and nothing plays on its own — the app offers the story of the place you reach, and you press play. If you want a person to answer questions, or you are going into the underground with a guided group anyway, that changes the calculation.
